Description:

We break down the South Atlantic Blueprint area into subregions to reduce processing time and help with balancing weights across indicators in such a large and varied geography.

These subregions were created using a combination of ecoregions and watershed boundaries. We used Level III and IV Ecoregions of the Conterminous United States (also known as Omernik ecoregions) to define the boundary between the Piedmont and the Coastal Plain. We then used the 4-digit watershed boundary dataset to further down the Coastal Plain into Gulf and Atlantic sections. This results in 3 broad subregions: Piedmont, Atlantic Coastal Plain, Gulf Coastal Plain.

Areas of the South Atlantic Blueprint extent not covered by the ecoregion or watershed boundary dataset are included in the marine area. We used a marine ecoregion dataset to divide the marine area into two subregions. Areas with an attribute of “Carolinian Atlantic” or “Virginian Atlantic” in the NAME_L1 field in this marine ecoregion dataset were considered part of the Marine Shelf and Extension subregion; areas with an attribute of “Gulf Stream” or “Northern Gulf Stream Transition” were considered part of the Marine Gulf Stream subregion.
